ARTIST STATEMENT
Seeds From Home 

Working to the theme "Seeds from Home” my thinking has been split three ways;
of a seed brought from home,
of a seed in the literal sense,
of a seed in the sense of a memory, a comfort, or a tradition.

In the “Grown from a New Home” series I have looked at representing the glory of plants that could have been lovingly brought along on a voyage as a small seed and then cultivated in a new land, as a precious memory of a homeland.

The “Seeds from Paper” series is my impossible twist on time. The artworks themselves are drawn on genuine 18th Century (circa 1790) paper that was made before the Swan River colony was established (1829) in Western Australia. It gives us some perspective on time, to be able to think that this paper existed before these plants were known to Europeans.

In the “West Australian Native Still-life” series the seed is represented by the vessel, an object containing memories brought from a homeland and filled with the only flowers that could be found, flowers native to Western Australia.
